Large chunk of city students want less summer homework and more options, survey shows

ONE-THIRD of Shanghai students wish to have less school homework during summer vacation, a survey showed today.

The survey is based on responses from more than 5,000 students from 66 primary, middle and high schools across Shanghai that sought to learn what students want to do during summer vacation. The survey was conducted by the website shedunews.com, a news portal of the Shanghai Education Commission.

About 38 percent of the respondents said they want the school to remove boring summer homework, and 33 percent want the amount of summer homework to be reduced. Many students said it was useless to answer repeated questions and copy content without thinking. Nearly half the respondents wanted more varied homework assignments, with options to choose from.

According to the survey, students' favorite activity during summer vacation is to see movies, followed by traveling and reading.

The website plans to invite celebrities, including writers, sports stars and singers, to give interesting homework to attract students to do it voluntarily.
