Local elderly population to soar over next 3 years
THE increase in the population of senior citizens in the city will accelerate in the next three years. From last year to 2015, the increase in the elderly population will be two times that from 2005 to 2010, Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau said that by the end of 2015, the city is expected to have over 4.3 million seniors aged above 60, occupying nearly 30 percent of the overall registered population. Among which more than 700,000 will aged above 80.
Families comprising of only seniors will also increase markedly, especially in suburban areas, putting more pressure on local resources.
Officials said the biggest problems will remain the lack of old-age homes, financial support for institutions that care for the elderly and lack of non-governmental investment.
Meanwhile, the regional layout of seniors' homes now is not very conducive, because most homes with relatively better conditions are in suburban areas, but families living in downtown are not willing to send seniors to the suburbs, officials said.
To solve the problem, the local government will open more old-age homes from now on until the end of 2015.
