Local undergraduate programs acrredited by ABET

THE University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute announced today that its undergraduate programs, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, were accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

“The accreditation is a milestone for our institute in its 10-year history,” said Huang Peisen, dean of the institute. “It is helpful for our institute to further explore international cooperation and promote competitiveness at home and abroad. It is also helpful for students to seek higher education and international communication programs.”

The accredited programs are also expected to help the school to attract more international students with high-quality internationalized education.

ABET is a US-based accrediting agency for programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology and programs accredited by it are believed to meet the quality standards of the profession for which programs prepares graduates.

To date, approximately 3,600 programs at over 700 colleges and universities in 29 countries have received ABET accreditation, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Approximately 85,000 students graduate from ABET-accredited programs each year, and millions of graduates have received degrees from ABET-accredited programs since 1932.

The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute was established in April 2006 and is regarded as a successful model of international cooperation. It now has 1,271 students, including 1,111 undergraduates and 160 postgraduates. These include 41 overseas students.
