Memorial fund for tragic counselor

STUDENTS and staff at Shanghai Maritime University have raised 100,000 yuan (US$16,329) to create a memorial fund for a student counselor who died in a car accident on the first day of term.
Qin Yi, 26, was hit by a car on her way home from the university on September 14. She suffered severe head injuries and died five days later.
The university set up a fund named after Qin, who was described as a caring counselor, always ready to help students.
The money will be used to help support Qin’s 8-month-old daughter and poor students.
Qin became a student counselor of School of Economics and Management at Shanghai Maritime University after graduation in 2010.
Her job involved helping freshmen adapt to college life and dealing with student disputes and complaints.
The school said Qin was hardworking and meticulous.
The accident occurred as Qin was traveling home to feed her child before returning to campus that evening to present a lecture to students on how to adapt to college life.
Students and teachers paid tribute to Qin on the Weibo and WeChat platforms. Many recalled her as being enthusiastic, responsible and caring.
Qin also took part in voluntary work to help people with mental health problems.
Qin’s husband Gao Jian, a lecturer at the university, said his wife was a good daughter-in-law, wife and mother.
He added that the family appreciated all the kindness shown toward them.
