Migrants to be half of city population
As of June, there were 24.35 million people in Shanghai, including about 14.19 million registered residents and about 9.82 million migrant people. Migrants made up 40.3 percent of the total population.
Migrant people mostly live in suburban areas with convenient transportation, more work opportunities and lower living expenses. The Pudong New Area had the largest number of migrants, and downtown Jing'an District had the least.
By 2015, it's expected there will be 11.5 million migrant people in Shanghai and, by 2020, 14 million, when the number of migrants will be about the same as registered residents, the city's population service and management office said yesterday.
