More students get chance to go abroad
HONGKOU District government is to send hundreds of students to study abroad every year to expand their “global outlook.”
The government and state-owned enterprises in Hongkou will pay to organize more than 100 outstanding high-school students each year to study abroad as part of a series of student supportive policies announced by the authorities.
A further 100 students will be sent abroad annually to visit or exchange with their foreign counterparts.
“The project aims to enhance the students’ intercultural communication capability and expand their global outlook,” said Huang Lifang, a senior official with Hongkou education bureau.
Elementary and middle school students are encouraged to take part in various international competitions, such as the Odyssey of the Mind and a global robot making tournament.
Each Hongkou school would establish a “cooperative relationship” with an overseas school and carry out exchanges between students and teachers regularly, the district government said.
Foreign teachers will be appointed to give lessons to Chinese students of all ages. A batch of international courses such as STEAM and A-Levels will be taught at local schools in a trial operation. Students will also be invited to visit foreign consulates in Shanghai.
More foreign language courses, such as Hebrew, will be launched at Hongkou schools.
