NYU plans no joint-venture universities after Shanghai
NEW York University will not build new joint-venture universities in other countries in the foreseeable future after opening NYU Shanghai, the first Sino-US joint venture university, which opens this month, New York University President John Sexton said in Shanghai today.
Sexton, who came on a visit to greet the inaugural students of NYU Shanghai, said there will be only three doorways to NYU before 2020 — NYU in the United States, in Abu Dhabi and now in Shanghai.
“We have much to develop at NYU Shanghai. It’s conceivable that NYU may open one or two more study-away sites in countries such as India and Brazil. But nothing big like NYU Shanghai,” said Sexton.
“NYU Shanghai is not a branch but a door where you can enter the NYU system, which allows students and faculty to circulate to all the campuses and study-away sites in the system,” he added.
Sexton said NYU Shanghai students are among the most talented and carefully selected. He said he hopes the students will study hard and open themselves to new experiences during their stay in Shanghai.
The university is a joint venture with East China Normal University.
