Nursery to close next month due to losses

A KINDERGARTEN in Minhang District has announced it will close at the end of next month.

The owners of Alphaville Garten told parents about the planned closure earlier this week. It said the decision was taken after the school booked a loss of 7 million yuan (US$1.1 million).

Its principal declined to be interviewed by Shanghai Daily yesterday.

The Minhang education bureau confirmed it had received a closure application from the company, adding that it will work with parents to find alternative places for their children.

The school, in Qibao Town, was home to 180 pupils aged 2 to 6. Alphaville runs two other kindergartens — in Jiading District and the Pudong New Area — but these are not slated for closure.

“Even if the company was making a loss, the decision to close shouldn’t have been made so suddenly,” said a man surnamed Wang, whose 3-year-old daughter goes to the Qibao school.

“We were told via a WeChat group at 7pm on Tuesday to go to a meeting the next day and that’s when they told us they were closing,” he told Shanghai Daily.

The mother of a 6-year-old pupil, surnamed Liu, was also disgruntled at the timing of the announcement, coming so close to the Spring Festival.

“It’s too unexpected,” she said.

“Some of the children weren’t even back from their hometowns after celebrating the Chinese New Year.”

Another parent, who declined to be named, said that the school had offered him a place for his child at an alternative kindergarten, but that he had turned it down.
