Parents' relief after school is completed
PARENTS of more than 1,000 migrant children in Baoshan District were relieved to learn yesterday that construction of their children's new school is now complete.
Last month, Shouhu Primary School in Gucun Town was demolished and ordered to relocate, leaving parents worried children would have nowhere to go when school starts next month.
An official, surnamed Jiang, with the township government, said construction of the new building, some 2 kilometers from the old one and five or six times bigger, was completed yesterday, and not only the students who studied at the Shouhu school before but some new students, most being migrant children, would start there on September 1.
All migrant children in Shanghai are to receive free education either at the city's public schools or migrant children's schools, according to local authorities' plans and Shanghai will be the first city in China to provide free education for migrant children. More than 420,000 such children now receive education in the city.
Along with the free education, the city government is going to equip 160 migrant children's schools with libraries and sports facilities by the end of the year.
The measures are in response to a proposal at the annual session of the Shanghai committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference earlier this year. The proposal, based on the research on migrant children's schools in the Pudong New Area, suggested increasing subsidies to migrant children's schools, and providing more appropriate teaching materials for children who have to take tests for high schools and universities back in their hometown.
The Shanghai Education Commission said it is working on the proposals, especially in relation to teaching materials.
