Report reveals vocational education data

MORE than 98 percent of last year’s 35,688 graduates from 84 local secondary vocational schools are now employed or in higher education, according to a report published yesterday by the Shanghai Education Commission.
The 98 percent “job or study” mark has been virtually unchanged for the past five years. Of those, 56 percent have jobs this year, and 42 percent are still studying, it said.
Guo Weilu, the commission’s deputy director, said: “All vocational schools are required to set up majors according to the talent demand of local industries.”
The schools also opened 16 vocational groups, which work with local companies, he said.
Some of the most popular courses for people at vocational schools are: international business, nursing, accounting, and mechanical and electronic engineering, the report said.
More than 24 percent of the people who graduated in 2015 now earn more than 3,000 yuan (US$465) a month.
Feng Lijuan who works for recruitment website 51Job.com, said: “Vocational students are cultivated according to professional requirements, which enables them to start practical working more quickly than many university students.
“Shanghai has done well in connecting vocational schools with companies,” she said.
Guo said that educational authorities have introduced systems to help pupils from vocational schools move on to vocational college or university.
Another survey conducted by the education commission found that half of the 7,782 people who graduated from secondary vocational schools between 2010 and 2015 participated on-the-job learning for higher diploma and advanced technical skills.
