Safety is top priority on first day of school

ABOUT 2 million middle, primary school and preschool students in Shanghai kicked off the new school year yesterday.
To relieve traffic congestion and keep children safe, traffic police said they increased the number of officers and traffic assistants around 370 schools and kindergartens across the city.
Li Qianlong, a Pudong traffic police official, said one-third more officers than usual were on the streets of Pudong yesterday morning.
Three policemen and four traffic assistants directed traffic yesterday morning on Shenjianong Road, a narrow street with two motor lanes in front of Shanghai Fushan Zhengda Foreign Language Primary School in Pudong.
Parents helped out as well. Ten volunteers supervised as children got out of cars in the middle of the road and walked to the school.
Around the Shanghai Foreign Language School on Zhongshan Road in Hongkou District, parents can now drop off and pick up their children at over 200 temporary parking slots along Xinshi Road, Guangxiu Road and Tiyuhui Road W.
Meanwhile, to address illegal parking along Zhongshan Road and Jiangwan Road W., police have installed cameras to identify offenders. Chen Zhong, a police officer who works in the area, said parking maps will be handed out to parents and parking enforcement around Shanghai Foreign Language School will be stepped up.
“We will be sure to punish those who refuse to drive away and call tow tractors to take away cars parked right next to the gate of the school,” he warned.
