School promotes boys鈥 gender education

A local school wants to promote boys’ gender education based on a newly published textbook, claimed to be the first of its kind in China.
The textbook “Little Man,” published by the Shanghai Educational Publishing House, aims to promote “manliness” among boys and to help resolve any confusion over the physical and psychological aspects of puberty.
With its principal You Rui as the chief editor of the textbook, Zhabei No.3 Central Primary School contributed its experiences over 10 years of sex education for boys.
Now the school is preparing lessons based on the book that it hopes will be followed across the city. The model lessons will be taught in front of teachers from other schools next month.
Chen Laixiu, a leader of gender education at the school, said she had been covering boys’ gender education for 10 years. “We decided to do it as society and schools realized there were sissy problems in our boy students when most fathers were absent from children’s education.”
The textbook targets fourth and fifth graders (10 to 12-year-olds) and has six sessions to make boys aware of gender differences and to learn self-recognition, communication skills and a sense of responsibility, among other knowledge.
A book for girls’ gender education was also being planned.
