School鈥檚 out for 70 kids as kindergarten told to close
ABOUT 70 children in Putuo District will be without a place to study from today after the unlicensed kindergarten they attended was ordered to close.
The Putuo Education Bureau received a tip-off about the school — located in an office building on Zhongshan Road N. — and following an inspection on October 24 gave its owners until today to shut down.
Officials said the kindergarten was run by Shanghai Youhua Weiyi Cultural Communication Co, which is not licensed to operate such a business, Xinmin Evening News reported.
Teachers were quoted as saying that the school, which occupied two floors of the office building, had been operating for more than two years.
Most of the affected pupils come from migrant families and therefore do not qualify for places at public schools, they said.
Their parents opted to send them to the unlicensed school as it was cheaper than the alternatives in the private sector, according to the report.
The education bureau said it is trying to find alternative schools for about 70 children affected by the closure of the kindergarten, all of whom are aged between 3 and 6.
Migrant children can attend local schools only if their parents hold a Shanghai residence permit or other documents to prove they have a stable job and accommodation in the city.
