Special evaluation center is first of its kind
A special evaluation center, the first of its kind in China, was set up in Shanghai yesterday to provide a personal assessment service and design targeted education and rehabilitation plans for disabled children in local schools.
All exceptional children, with impairments in hearing, vision and mentality, can have free evaluation at the Special Student Education Evaluation Center, sited at Shanghai Pudong Special Education School, where 18 educational and health experts are on hand.
The center was set up by Shanghai Education Commission and Pudong Education Bureau.
“Education and rehabilitation plans will be tailored according to the evaluation results and will be modified based on regular follow-up assessment,” said Zhou Meiqin, director of the center and headmaster of the Shanghai Pudong Special Education School.
“Such professional evaluation is necessary as each child’s situation is different from others and need different help,” she added.
Shanghai had began piloting evaluation system for disabled students in 2012, but previous efforts focused more on medical evaluation, while the newly established center would balance medical and education assessment to develop a more comprehensive system, she said.
The center will also evaluate and guide education evaluation at local special schools, as well as train teachers to improve their professional skills.
There are now 8,463 special students in the city, according to the Shanghai Education Commission.
