Students rocked by school closures
A CITY English-language training school with three branches has suddenly closed, leaving more than 1,300 students in the lurch.
Students are demanding their tuitions of tens of thousands of yuan be returned.
However the school, Linguaphone, said in an online notice yesterday that it had just suspended operations to seek merger opportunities.
Victims called the police as they were worried about their tuitions.
"I didn't know the school was closed until I came to work on Monday," said a teacher surnamed Xie who works for the Xuhui District center.
The property owner said that the school owed it four months in rent.
At the same time, the school's Pudong branch closed and last month its Jing'an center shut.
The school's centers have about 1,300 students and 21 teachers including 10 foreigners.
Each student has paid tuition of more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,464).
The sudden closure of the three centers has caused panic among students and they are demanding personal explanations from school authorities.
"Considering that our working team members' safety cannot be guaranteed, we will not arrange meetings to answer your questions face to face until we have talked to police and evaluated the risks," the school said in a notice issued on its Website yesterday.
It will seek to carry out remote education and asked students to keep a close watch on its Website.
If merger talks failed, the school would apply for bankruptcy and its equipment would be used as financial assets to compensate students, according to the notice.
