Uni students keep cool as dorms get AC units
WITH summer on its way and the mercury rising, several Shanghai universities have begun installing air conditioners in their student dormitories.
Shanghai International Studies and Donghua were the first of the seven schools located in Songjiang University Town to have the appliances fitted.
According to Yi Yonggang, a publicity official at the Shanghai International Studies University, air conditioners could not be installed in the dorms until the electrical circuits in the buildings were upgraded.
“We’ve now rectified that problem and have begun installing the units in four dormitory buildings,” he said.
To help cover the cost of the project, the two universities will lease the units to students, who will also be required to cover the extra cost of electricity.
The schools declined to say how much they will charge.
At East China University of Science and Technology’s Fengxian campus, 1,940 air conditioners have been installed in student dorms. More than 85 percent of freshmen and sophomores applied to have the units fitted and will pay a premium for them.
“It’s reasonable to provide a comfortable living environment for the students,” said Zhang Ting, a publicity official at the university.
Meanwhile, an official from the Shanghai University said it plans to equip all student dorms with air conditioners by next year.
