University dredges river to support its rowing team
AN 800-meter section of Danshui River that runs through Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s campus in Minhang District has been officially declared a practice area for student rowers.
In the past, the oarsmen and -women had to go to an aquatic sports center on Dianshan Lake in Qingpu District to practice, said coach Yang Yiming.
“Now they can practice in the river once or twice a week,” he said.
“In the past, the river was unusable as it was too shallow, but we remedied that problem by having a section of it dredged,” Yang said.
Jiao Tong has had a rowing team since 2001, but it currently has only 15 members.
To help promote the sport, the university yesterday established a club for people with more of a social interest in rowing, which has so far attracted 120 members.
Yang said it is also working with the Chinese Rowing Association to promote the sport among young people.
Despite Yang’s upbeat tone, several members of the rowing team have complained that regardless of the dredging, the section of river within the campus is too short and too narrow to be of any real use as a training facility.
A university official said he was aware of the problem and was taking steps to remedy it.
“We are in talks with the city’s waterway administration about extending the (navigable) course to about 2 kilometers and widening it to 50m,” said Yu Chaoyang, Party chief of the university’s sports department.
