Website allows access to many university courses

LOCAL university students will be able to access courses provided by more than 30 other local universities online via the Shanghai Course Center that was launched yesterday.

The first group of seven courses is available at www.ucc.sh.edu.cn. Only registered university students are eligible.

The system is set up for students to earn credit by watching online courses and then attending class and participating in discussions that will be part of the course at their own university. Credit will be recognized by all participating institutions.

Hundreds of courses should eventually be available on the site, officials said.

More than 1,200 students from 28 universities have applied for the philosophy course of Fudan University professor Wang Defeng.

More than 2,100 students from across the city have applied for four courses launched by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

While local universities had online offerings, students usually had to travel to attend courses at other universities. Few courses were offered to outside students.
