Website makes it easy for foreign students

THE Shanghai Education Commission has launched an English website for foreign students keen on pursuing higher studies in Shanghai.

Students can log on to en.study-shanghai.org and apply for admission to local colleges and universities. It also carries information about the city.

The website is launched to attract more international students to study in Shanghai by providing them guidance on applications and information regarding regulations such as visas and residence permits.

Students can also download a mobile application to check the status of their application. The app can be downloaded from the website but works only on Android system.

Shanghai has seen a jump in the number of international students — 53,800 by the end of 2013 — coming from 186 countries and regions. The figure was up 30 percent from 2010 and accounted for about one-seventh of the total number of foreign students in China.

More than 70 percent of them stay for over six months in Shanghai, accounting for 20 percent of the total number of foreign residents in the city, the commission said.

Yang Weiren, director of the international department at the commission, said the website is a window for international students to learn about higher education in Shanghai. Students can apply for scholarships offered by the Shanghai government besides getting information about transportation, shopping streets, cultural life and learn Chinese and Shanghai dialect.

The city aims to become a top  study destinations in Asia for foreign students by 2020.

Riwan Ben Ezzeddine, a French exchange student at Shanghai University, said he couldn’t wait to try out the mobile app. “It is very convenient because students use a lot of applications today. I think it will help international students,” Ezzeddine said.
