Young Sherlocks test their skills

ABOUT 20 children — every one of them a budding Sherlock Holmes — took part in a fingerprint and detective session at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum yesterday.
First the children, aged from 7 to 14, carried out experiments, including fingerprint tests, then they turned detective and were tasked with identifying a “criminal suspect.”
It was all part of a science lesson held by the museum as a trial session for a new project called Agilent Science Lab that is to be rolled out over the summer vacation at the museum.
The project is being launched by the museum and Agilent Technologies, an American public research, development and manufacturing company.
During the trial session, the children learnt about three basic types of fingerprints, and how to tell different fabric materials by observing their reaction and smell after burning. Other science experiments will be conducted throughout the project.
From July 8, Agilent employees will hold a science experiment session at the museum every Saturday afternoon for a maximum of 20 youngsters.
