Youth unemployment drops, rate still high
THE number of registered unemployed local youths (under age 35) has declined from 80,000 in the first quarter to about 64,000 in the second quarter, Shanghai labor bureau announced today.
But the situation remains harsh with many of them facing great difficulty in finding work, according to the bureau. About 9,500 of the currently unemployed youths have remained jobless for more than one year.
Lack of patience to stay in one job to gather valuable experience and unnecessary intervention from parents about which job to choose are some of the main reasons preventing jobless youths from finding new work smoothly, said some professional job consultants who are part of a government program to help this group.
