3D World Cup screenings in doubt
THE 3D live broadcasts of World Cup matches in Shanghai cinemas were still up in the air today, managers said, considering the high cost and cultural contradictions.
Local football fans may not able to enjoy the opening match of the cup next Friday in 3D as the Stellar cinema in Super Brand Mall, one of only two cinemas that had applied for permission, has quit the idea and the other, Dadi Digital Cinema in Dahua area of Baoshan District, has still not decided whether to carry on.
"Our officials are still discussing it," said Xie Donglin, public relations manager of the Dadi Circuit. "I think they would also reconsider the situation if we had have to miss the opening match."
Since the 3D live broadcast of the match between Manchester United and Arsenal in the English Premier League on February 1, 3D technology has been regarded as a revolution in watching football. As the first 3D World Cup, 25 of the total 64 matches of the tournament will be broadcast live in 3D.
However, only about 40 Chinese cinemas applied for the live broadcast feeds, of which only two are in Shanghai.
The opening ceremony and match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is at 10pm next Friday Beijing time at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium. The home team South Africa will face Mexico.
