90-year-old to help nurture rural music
A public-welfare project supporting music popularization in two remote areas of China was announced by China Shanghai International Arts Festival together with kelti (China) daily product company.
Under the plan, called Wheat Project, a group of musicians in Shanghai led by 90-year-old conductor Cao Peng, will visit the rural revolutionary base areas Jinzhai County in Anhui Province and Zunyi City in Guizhou Province, and select 20 children who have the dream and potential of joining the Seeds Chorus in Shanghai.
After training, the chorus will perform an original song, “The Song of Seeds,” together with professional art troupes at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, which runs from October 12 to November 12. The chorus is expected to release an original song each year.
In addition, Wheat Project, whose slogan is Journey of Hope, will also support schools in the remote regions to set up their own choruses for children. Seeds Chorus members are expected to help these choruses after performing in Shanghai, and contribute to the musical growth of the children.
Cao has been actively involved with classical music for 70 years. After five years as a scholarship student in Moscow, he returned to Shanghai in 1961 and was appointed permanent conductor in residence for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
After an illustrious career both at home and abroad, Cao devoted his later years to nurturing musical talent in young people and non-professionals.
He founded the Shanghai Student Orchestra and the Sound of Angels Salon, the latter dedicated to helping autistic children engage with their surroundings through music. His City Symphony Orchestra is the only non-profit, part-time symphonic orchestra in China.
