Arts fair鈥檚 offerings quickly snapped up
ORIGINAL productions, made both at home and abroad, are finding buyers at the 2016 Shanghai Performing Arts Fair that began yesterday.
Five agreements were signed in the first morning. Among them was “Papa’s Time Machine,” an unconventional puppet theater by Chinese visual artist Maleonn, which will premiere as China Shanghai International Arts Festival’s commissioned work this year.
The steam-driven, punk-style, large-sized puppet theater won much attention among representatives from art festivals and program buyers after a brief showcasing at the SIAF Performing Arts Fair last year.
The script is based on the everyday experiences of Maleonn and his father, who has Alzheimer’s, leading audiences into a world of poetic fantasies.
The theater bagged the rights to perform at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in 2017 or 2018, and won an agency contract with Arts Midwest and Barbash Arts Consulting Services for its touring project next year in the West.
“Rising Artists’ Works,” a multi-arts series, will be staged at Southbank Center, London, next year, while the music film “Zhan Duan” (Kill and Judge) will be shown at the center as early as this December.
The arts fair will run until Sunday, with more than 410 organizations home and abroad taking part.
Meanwhile, local residents and expats will be offered more than 100 cultural and art events at the 2016 Suzhou Creek Cultural and Art Festival, which opens on Tuesday.
The annual cultural program of Putuo District, which will be running for about a month, is celebrating its 10th year.
Among this year’s events will be art and photography exhibitions themed on the history and development of Suzhou Creek, cultural performances and poetry recitation competition.
Global Harbor, the largest shopping mall in Putuo District will host piano concerts, dance performances and clown shows. A highlight of the festival is a “grand grassroots singing competition” of “New Shanghainese.” More than 2,400 people have applied to enter.
