Ashes of Time returns
RENOWNED Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai's re-edited version of his 1994 classic "Ashes of Time" was released in Chinese mainland on March 27 -- five days before the sixth anniversary of star Leslie Cheung's death.
Wong's extensively reworked version ends with a close-up of Cheung, who committed suicide at age 46 by jumping from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong.
"Ashes of Time" failed to recoup its HK$40 million budget (US$5 million) when it was originally released, grossing less than HK$1 million. But the reworked version has already made 30 million yuan (US$4.4 million) against Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire."
