THIS year’s Magnolia Award for best leading actor in a television series went to Chen Baoguo for his performance in “The Old Farmer.”
Chen was praised for his portrayal of the trials and tribulations faced by the eponymous farmer over a period of 60 years.
The awards were presented at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center at a special event to mark the end of the 21st Shanghai TV Festival.
Zhou Xun was named best leading actress in a TV drama for “Red Sorghum.”
“I’m so lucky to have had the chance to play such an independent role,” she said.
About 1,000 productions from around the world competed for this year’s awards, with about 50 nominated in the categories of TV series, documentary, animation and variety. The German series “Tannbach” picked up the gong for Best Foreign TV Film/Miniseries, while the Best Foreign TV Series/Serial went to the long-running American comedy series “Modern Family.”
In the Chinese TV series category, “All Quiet Peking” won the award for Best TV Series.
