Big names for SSO concerts

SOME of the great names in music will be invited to perform with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) for its 2009-2010 Season's Concerts.

After the SSO 130 Gala Concert on September 26 to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the orchestra, the season's first regular concert will feature Lang Lang on September 27 at Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Lang Lang, from Shenyang, Liaoning Province, was the first first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and some of the leading American orchestras.

The famous international musicians include cellist Mischa Maisky, Sarah Chang, the Korean-American violin virtuoso, violinist Augustin Dumay, and Korean pianist Kun Woo Paik.

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra has several concerts scheduled for Expo next year and it will sign with Columbia Artists Management Inc from this season for all overseas performances.

It will perform in the United States this November for the closing ceremony of the China Arts Festival and will have a 12-concert tour of the East and West Coast of the US and Canada. It will begin its European tour in Warsaw.

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is the oldest and best-known orchestra in Asia.
