Big-name May concerts
THE financial crisis won't prevent two world-renowned symphony orchestras from visiting Shanghai in May, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center confirmed yesterday.
Germany's Sachsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from the United States will perform at the center on May 6 and 16.
The Pittsburgh Symphony concert will close the 2009 Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.
Also yesterday, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra announced a series of concerts and lectures to educate the public and popularize classical music.
From March 1, four "Music Workshop" symphony concerts will be held at the Shanghai Concert Hall, with the first show entitled "Schumann in Love."
Local cellist Tian Bonian and Norwegian conductor Terje Mikkelsen will take part in the opening concert.
Meanwhile, a series of 20 interactive lectures will allow people to try various instruments.
"They will have a lot of fun and become more interested in classic music from the lectures," said Chen Guang掳?xian, director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
The lectures will take place at the concert hall as well as at schools, communities, villages and prisons.
