Blockbuster year at box office
SHANGHAI United Cinema Lines, the city's leading cinema chain, took more than 495 million yuan (US$72.4 million) in box office receipts last year, a 29-percent increase from 2007, the chain's deputy director said yesterday.
Among the top 10 films last year, seven were domestic productions, said Wu Hehu. Shanghai United Cinema Lines has more than 60 cinemas in the city
"Red Cliff" ranked No.?1, taking 32.6 million yuan at city box offices. It took more than 300 million yuan in the whole of China and 700 million yuan globally, Shanghai Morning Post reported.
The film featured several leading Asian stars including award-winning Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, Taiwan model/actress Lin Chi-ling and leading mainland actor Zhang Fengyi.
The story takes place against the backdrop of the epic Battle of Red Cliff during China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD).
"Kung Fu Panda" ranked No. 2 with takings of 29.2 million yuan in Shanghai.
The other eight films in the top 10 were "Painted Skin," "If You Are the One," "CJ7," "Quantum of Solace," "The Forbidden Kingdom," "Kung Fu Dunk," "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor."
"There were 163 films released last year (in Chinese mainland), of which 117 were domestic productions," said Wu. "June and December were the two best months, during each of which we reaped more than 50 million yuan."
Wu attributed last year's movie boom to a more diversified film market where originality, innovation and efficient marketing and distribution drove the industry.
Cinema manager Li Lan said his business benefited from the improved quality of domestic films. Yonghua Cinema City in Xujiahui reported the best earnings, taking 44.58 million yuan for the year.
The nation's movie theaters took in 4.2 billion yuan in 2008, an increase of 888 million yuan from 2007, the newspaper reported. Domestic films made 2.56 billion yuan nationwide, more than 60 percent of total Chinese box office takings.
Liu Haibo, a teacher of film at Shanghai University, said the film industry has been growing for the past eight years since the success of blockbusters such as Zhang Yimou's "Hero" and Chen Kaige's "The Promise."
