Bring high art to the shopping crowd

A SHOW of ancient Chinese clothing stopped shoppers in their tracks at the Metro City shopping mall in Xuhui District on Saturday.

It kicked off a month-long event organized by the district’s culture bureau.

More than 10 performers wore clothes of six periods in China’s history, including the Han Dynasty, the Wei-Jin Period and the Tang, Song and Ming dynasties, as well as more modern times.

“Clothes are not merely clothes. They also bear a rich cultural connotation and history,” said Teng Yanhai, the director of the Hanchao Culture Studio that presented the show.

“Ancient clothes are not separated from us — it is where our modern clothes and culture came from.”

Chen Yalan, a student from Shanghai University, said The show was a pleasant surprise for her and her friends.

“Usually, we only see commercial promotion activities in shopping malls, it is really amazing to see such a special event,” she said. “The clothes are beautiful and the voice-over is also informative.”

A man surnamed Sheng said he wanted to see more.

The bureau’s deputy director, Fu Xiao, said cultural events at the mall had been running since 2013.

“It makes classic arts closer to the public and encourages them to understand, love and enjoy art. This year, we have stepped up our activities.”

Performances are staged on Saturdays at 2pm.
