Chorus grows as mass performance approaches
APPLICATIONS have proven to be hot for the 30,000 strong chorus that will sing the "Yellow River Cantata."
So far, more than 10,000 musicians and music lovers from home and abroad have signed on since late last month for the singing gala on September 19, officials said over the weekend.
Organized by the city government and Shanghai Media Group, the performance at Shanghai Jiangwan Stadium will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the cantata composed by Xian Xinghai.
The strong emotional force of the cantata made it a patriotic epic during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45). It has inspired generations of Chinese.
Gu Jingde, an 87-year-old retired soldier from the former New Fourth Army, is one of the oldest participants in the chorus.
Applicants will receive training from veteran musicians and singers.
People can register by the end of July by calling 5881-2000.
