City art festival offers 22,000 events

THE first Shanghai Citizens Art Festival will open on Saturday, offering a wide range of interactive cultural and art events.

The festival was initiated by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV and will run for the rest of the year. More than 22,000 cultural events will be held at the city's 203 community centers.

According to Xiao Yeying, an organizer of the festival, they hope to make different genres of art accessible to more people.

"Well-known artists such as paper-cutting celebrity Li Shoubai, local writer Zhao Lihong and Huju Opera performer Mao Shanyu will host lectures in which they share their expertise and experiences," Xiao said.

Residents can also take part in a variety of light-hearted programs including dance and drama competitions, a photography exhibition, alley game showcase, creative bazaar and family day.
