City best in China for cultural activities
SHANGHAI may pride itself for being on top as a cultural center in China but it has a lot of catching-up to do to match the other major metropolises in the world.
Shanghai Normal University said in a report that the city ranked first for the fourth time in the university’s annual survey about cultural services on offer for residents in the country. It surveyed 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China.
But the ranking pales when compared internationally to London, New York, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing, Toronto, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Sydney and Berlin.
The survey found Shanghai has 24.7 book stores per 100,000 people, and stages 84,900 performances in theaters in a year — highest among all the 13 cities — but slips to third in the three indicators — books, size of film audience and cinema ticket price. It has about 63 million books in public libraries, 260,000 audiences at the Shanghai International Film, and US$10, the average price for film tickets.
The city also ranks a poor 12th for public libraries — it has only 25. Paris tops with 383. On an average, 100,000 Shanghainese share 0.1 public libraries, with the number being 4.89 for London. Shanghai residents borrow 2.62 books from public libraries on an average every year, ranking 11th with Toronto way ahead with 12.24 per capita.
Shanghai ranks fourth in terms of cinema theater audiences with 22.9 million viewers, while Paris manages more than 58 million.
Shanghai residents contributed US$10.58 a year on average to box office earnings at local cinemas, the 7th highest among all the cities. London is first with US$46.
The city receives about 7.6 million international tourists every year, taking the sixth place. Hong Kong attracts 42 million visitors annually.
Shanghai has 100 museums with Los Angles the straight winner with 221.
About 17.68 million local residents visit museums in a year, the 12th highest. London beats all others with more than 253.27 million citizens making the trip to museums.
In the list of concert halls, Shanghai ranks 8th while Tokyo boasts 15. In terms of galleries, Shanghai has 208, far behind Paris at 1,046.
