City eyes plan for 'Broadway'

GET ready everybody, "Shanghai Broadway" is coming.

Officials said yesterday that an area around People's Square will be turned into Shanghai Broadway in the next five years. The area will include theaters, cinemas and other art and entertainment venues.

Shanghai Broadway will include the area around People's Square, Xizang Road as well as Nanjing Road, from Xizang Road to Jing'an Temple.

The government will give incentives to help support its development.

The idea was proposed by members of the city's and Huangpu District's people's political consultative conferences. They said the city had 447 arts and entertainment venues registered downtown as of last October.

Xu Kailin, a Huangpu District official, said the area can be divided into three parts - classics, fashion and traditional Chinese culture - suitable for different art forms such as films, dramas, magic and Peking Opera.

According to the proposal, the venues should be modernized in a "fashionable" way with high-tech lighting and sound systems, along with support facilities.
