City readers favor print over digital

ALMOST seven out of 10 Shanghai readers prefer printed material to reading on screens, according to a poll released yesterday.

The survey by the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau found that 68 percent of readers prefer reading on paper.

This comes ahead of the Shanghai Book Fair, which opens next week.

But the poll of 4,675 people found that digital reading is creeping up in popularity, with 31 percent saying it was their preferred mode of reading, compared to 28 percent last year.

A wide range of sources, easy access and cheap or free publications were among the main reasons given for turning to digital.

For a third year, cellphones were the most-used device for digital reading.

However, respondents also admitted that despite the convenience of digital reading, tired eyes are a problem if they stare at screens too long.

Meanwhile, half of the respondents said they read about 30 minutes a day.

Those who read for less than 15 minutes a day hit a new high of just under 19 percent.

But at the same time while those who read more than an hour a day also rose, to around 20 percent.

About 72 percent of those surveyed said they spend at least 50 yuan (US$8) buying printed books every year, while 6 percent said they spend more than 1,000 yuan on printed books — up nearly 2 percent points on last year.

The Shanghai Book Fair runs from August 19 to 25.
