City to welcome panda families

SHANGHAI’S animal lovers will one day see entire giant panda families living together at a new home planned for the rare species, say officials.

China’s State Forestry Administration yesterday said it had reached an agreement with the city government to build a new reserve and research center for the beloved creatures at the Shanghai Wild Life Park in Pudong.

“We don’t have a timetable for when the center will be completed. But we know for sure that in the future, residents will be able to see panda families in Shanghai,” Ni Li, a park official, told Shanghai Daily.

China’s giant panda centers are located mainly in the western provinces of Sichuan and Gansu, but the administration wants to see big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou take part in preservation and research work aimed at making sure future generations can enjoy the “national treasure.”

The Shanghai Wild Life Park is currently home to five giant pandas. “Members of our professional team have taken care of a total of 20 giant pandas,” said Ni. “Our experience helped us to become a candidate for the new center.”

According to Ni, a place in the park has already been set aside for the new center, and more experts will be recruited to help with future breeding and research programs.

Meanwhile, the administration yesterday announced that it will help Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang District establish a research and breeding center for wild and endangered plants.

According to Huang Weichang, deputy director of the garden, the center will mainly study species found in east China. “We want to raise people’s awareness of rare plants,” Huang told Shanghai Daily.

“There are many animal protection funds around the world now, and we hope more people will start paying attention to endangered plants, too.”

The garden has about 100 rare plants on display and more are expected to be added.
