Disney float set to make festival debut
A DISNEY-THEMED float with classic characters will make its debut at the opening parade of the Shanghai Tourism Festival next month, organizers said yesterday.
A team of Chinese and foreign experts is now working on the design of the float that will blend authentic Disney features with distinctly Chinese elements, the Shanghai Disney Resort said.
Waving to the crowds will be Disney favorites that will delight the young and rekindle childhood memories among older onlookers, said Yang Jinsong, director of the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
This is the first time that Shanghai Disney Resort, which is set to open in late 2015, has taken part in the event.
The parade in downtown Huaihai Road will be held on September 13 and feature 22 floats and 32 performance troupes — with 24 coming from 16 foreign countries including the United States, Italy, Germany, Australia and Chile.
The event will gather together more than 1,400 performers, a record in the 20-plus year history of the festival.
Meanwhile, a total of 56 scenic spots, such as Fengjing Water Town, will offer up to half-price discounts for part of the festival, organizers said.
The Shanghai Tourism Festival will run from September 13 to October 6.
Other highlights include a musical set against the backdrop of old Shanghai in the 1930s at the Yunfeng Theater, fireworks at Century Park, light and dance show “Shanghai Story,” a cruise ship flotilla on the Huangpu River and a group wedding at the Bund, organizers said.
Events also include an international magic festival and a kite flying festival.
