Enjoy a walking tour of Shanghai
SOME 800 citizens, tourists and expat residents will experience Shanghai's beauty, history and culture when they join free walking tours next Sunday, a highlight of the Shanghai Tourism Festival, officials said yesterday.
Shanghai Citywalks participants touring Hongkou, Xuhui, Huangpu, Jing’an and Changning districts will see landmark buildings and beautiful garden villas, and can drink coffee at relaxing cafes while enjoying stories by renowned Chinese writers.
The four-hour tour in Xuhui District will start on tranquil and trendy Wukang Road and then run along Wuyuan Road, Anfu Road, Hunan Road and Huaihai Road M. The tour includes the historic Normandie Apartments (Wukang Building) designed by renowned Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec; the Shanghai Camera History Museum; the former residence of Chinese writer Ba Jin, also known as Li Yaotang (1904-2005), a garden villa on Wukang Road; and the former residence of cartoonist Zhang Leping (1910-1992) on Wuyuan Road, a two-story villa where he lived for 42 years.
Walkers will receive a free map and book at the beginning of each tour.
Foreigners need to provide their passport number for insurance purposes.
The three-hour Huangpu tour will take walkers to some fine examples of Art Deco architecture. They will be regaled with stories about the Park Hotel, the Grand Theater, the Peace Hotel and the Customs House.
In Changning District, lovers of Chinese cooking will be taken on a culinary journey they won’t soon forget, stopping at restaurants along the way for Shanghai favorites such as xiaolongbao dumplings and scallion pancakes. Other stops on the tour include cafes, book stores and flower shops.
“Shanghai Citywalks, now in its third year, has become one of the most popular events of the Shanghai Tourism Festival,” said Shen Chao, director of the market management department of the Shanghai Tourism Administration. “The project will be expanded continuously with more themed tours launched in the future to let tourists experience the glamor of the city.”
