Folk fair to be held in ancient temple

PUDONG New Area authorities are holding a fair in an 890-year-old temple from April 9 to 13.

The five-day Shengtang Temple Fair in Pudong's Sanlin Town will include a parade, folk performances, cultural activities and traditional Taoist ceremonies, the Shanghai Evening Post reported yesterday.

The opening ceremony, featuring a parade of floats, will include 1,500 performers from 46 art troupes, a dragon-dance performance by a 100-meter dragon, as well as folk dances and songs.

The fair will also feature a Sanlin embroidery art show and a Sanlin porcelain-carving craft show, the newspaper said.

The Shengtang Temple Fair began in the 17th century and was held annually to the late 1980s in Sanlin Town. It was brought back last year and attracted 220,000 visitors over its three days.
