French orchestra celebrates diplomatic ties in Shanghai

The Garde Republicaine Orchestra, a group created in 1872 that is part of the French Gendarmerie, performed last night at the Shanghai Grand Theater to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France.

The orchestra is composed of 120 professional musicians, and it has gained an international reputation through performing around the world on official occasions.

France was the first major Western power to establish formal diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, which was founded in 1949.
