Geranium the star at city flower show
SHANGHAI International Flower Show will open at Shanghai Botanical Garden in Xuhui District on Friday, featuring rare orchids, a horticulture salon, flower courtyards presented by overseas botanical gardens, and a Han costume cultural show.
There will be 38 scenic spots in the key exhibition area, and gardening agencies or horticulture experts from Europe, the United States and Asia are participating in the display of flowers.
The major flower to be showcased is the geranium. There will be nearly 50,000 of them in 50 varieties.
In addition, 400,000 tulips and hyacinths will create a 7,000-square-meter flower blanket at the garden.
Cherry blossom, peach, peony and Chinese roses are also in full bloom.
A “Venus slipper exhibition” will display about 1,000 of the flower with about 60 varieties.
The gardening courtyard exhibition area will comprise 11 exquisite courtyards, including a French courtyard known as “French Garden” with fountain, bush wall, cafe and flower field, and a “Prague maze” that uses bamboo walls and conveys the message of how humans explore nature.
In addition, 10 events will be staged during the exhibition lasting till May 7. They include flower arrangement shows, flower painting display, a Han costume cultural show and night tours.
Visitors are able to learn about gardening and flower arrangement during the exhibition.
The Huangdaopo Memorial Hall inside the garden is dedicated to Huang Daopo, who made great contributions to the development of the Chinese traditional handicraft of cotton textile production. The hall will reopen on Friday after two years of restoration.
