Good translation vital to promote Chinese culture
PROMINENT Chinese writer Yu Qiuyu said he plans to choose well-translated Chinese classics such as "The Analects of Confucius" as recommended books for foreign readers.
Yu said he will invite local scholars who know both Chinese literature and English to pick out the best versions of translated Chinese literary works in the Yu Qiuyu Library that was founded yesterday in the Pudong Library.
"There are many English versions of Chinese classics, but many were translated by Chinese who know less about Chinese literature," Yu told Shanghai Daily today.
China should become a culture exporter to let more people around the world to know her culture, he told a press conference after the opening of his library.
The library will employ graduate students as workers and hold lectures on Chinese literature in the future, Yu said.
