Historic British office on the move
A 78-YEAR-OLD office building is to be moved to a new location this week to save it from the wrecking ball.
The former home of the British Aquarius Co, a six-story red-brick structure on Tongbei Road near Jining Road in Yangpu District, will be rolled 38 meters on tracks to its new location on Friday.
Built in 1935, the building was named an Outstanding Historic Protection Building of the city in 1999 and listed as a “unmovable structure” by the city government.
It will be the biggest building moved in the city, exceeding previous projects — the Minli Middle School on Weihai Road and the Shanghai Concert Hall near People’s Square.
“The former headquarters of Aquarius is 22 meters tall and covers 7,000 square meters. The concert hall that was moved 66 meters is only one third of its size,” said Zheng Huaqi, manager of the project.
The building will be moved 5.4 meters along a vertical axis and 33.3 meters on a horizontal axis.
It will then be rotated 1 degree into its new position.
The process will be complete by November 20, Zheng said.
In 1996, the building became the offices of food company the Shanghai Mailing Aquarius Co.
However, it now stands in the middle of a land to be developed into commercial areas.
In April, the team shifting the building began raising the structure and placing it on 324 jacks, each capable of holding some 150 tons, Zheng said.
The jacks are computer-controlled and will move in unison to shift the building.
“It’s quite a complicated process as even a slight deviation would cause great damage,” Zheng said.
Movement is controlled to within 2 millimeters.
A two-floor basement has been built in the new location and the old building will be placed upon it.
It will be stabilized to resist 7.0-magnitude earthquakes.
