Landmark theater rents out floor to luxury brand

SHANGHAI'S 80-year-old Cathay Theater on Huahai Road M. is back in operation after being shut for three months for renovation.

There have been criticism that the art-deco theater, built in the 1930s in concrete and steel and declared "excellent historic building" by the city government in 1994, was "sold" to a luxury brand.

But the theater's manager Zhang Yongliang said the building has retained its original flavor and upgraded its facilities after the renovation. He said a luxury brand had opened a franchised store on the second floor of the theater while nine former stores that operated before were moved out that led to a rumor that the theater was "occupied and closed."

"The three cinema halls at the theater are open to the public and will screen films as usual," said Zhang Xinni, the theater's director.

The newly opened theater gives a feeling of 1930s Shanghai.

The flooring is of marble while the iconic logo outside the building has also been adjusted after researching old pictures of the building, said Zhang Yongliang.
