Library service goes on the road

HUNDREDS of book lovers gathered at downtown Wujiang Road yesterday to see the launch of the city's first mobile library.

The vehicle - named "Reader No. 1" - will carry thousands of books to lend to readers across Jing'an District. Holders of a Shanghai Library Card can borrow up to five books at one time and may keep them for 28 days. Readers can apply for a library card in the vehicle.

And the mobile library may soon stock English books, according to a librarian surnamed Zhu.

The vehicle will be at Wujiang Road every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm. The service is also available at Yueda Plaza near Wanhangdu Road on Tuesdays and Jing'an Temple Plaza near Nanjing Road W. on Fridays. The times remain the same.

Borrowers may return books at any of the three locations or at Jing'an Library on Xinzha Road.

The distinctive van's wares include romantic and science fiction novels that are popular with young people.

"We want to make it easier for busy white-collar workers to borrow books, so we'll park near their offices," said Zhu.
