Library to offer much more than just books
THE “second phase” of Shanghai Library will provide a multi-faceted facility for the whole community, a senior official said yesterday.
“A modern library should be more than just a place for reading, it should be a communication platform,” Xiao Huwei, deputy director of the library’s institute of science and technical information, told Shanghai Daily on the sidelines of the Shanghai committee of the CPPCC.
A new library has been in the pipeline “for years,” he said.
Those involved are simply waiting for the government to approve the location, which is expected to be in the former World Expo area.
“The old building can’t meet the demands of the digital age,” Xiao said.
Its replacement will have high-speed Internet access, digital reading facilities, a cafe and lots of meeting rooms,” he said.
“Libraries are no less important than schools, as they give people access to lifelong study,” he said.
Registered users of Shanghai Library last year signed out more than 60 million titles, Xiao said.
