Local artist to stage Kunqu Opera adaptation of 'Hamlet'

TO commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, artist Zhang Jun, will premiere "I, Hamlet," as his latest Kunqu Opera adaptation of "Hamlet" tonight at China Art Museum.

The show will be staged in the city through Sunday. It will also be presented at the Changing China Festival in London in December.

Zhang, who was honored as a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011, plays four characters in the show, including Hamlet, Ophelia, ghost of Hamlet 'a father and gravedigger. He presents bilingual acting on stage.

The show is directed by Max Lee from Taiwan’s Guoguang Opera Company. Lee is well-known for the “Chinese Opera Actor” trilogy.

The Kunqu opera adaptation of "Hamlet" features elegant ancient Chinese verses to tell the story. The play does not narrate a story of deep hatred, but it is raises questions on life and death.
