THE Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the North German Radio (NDR) Symphony Orchestra yesterday agreed a five-year cooperation agreement.

Under the deal, the orchestras will arrange exchange visits, organize educational and training programs, and take part in special events and performances.
The first such concert will take place tonight, when the NDR performs at the Shanghai Symphony Hall under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock.

The German orchestra said it will return to Shanghai between 2018 and 2020, but in the meantime, several of its chief players have agreed to play with the Shanghai ensemble over the coming years, as well as running courses for students at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy.
For its part, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra said it has been invited to perform in 2017 during the German orchestra's first season at its new home, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
