Museum assembles exhibits

THE Shanghai History Museum has begun assembling exhibits from around the world as it prepares to take up residence at the former address of the Shanghai Art Museum on Nanjing Road W.
The exhibits — donated, borrowed or purchased by the museum — will showcase the history and culture of the city, the institution announced yesterday.
They can be historic archives, photos or other exhibits related to Shanghai’s major reforms and developments since the opening of the port in 1843. The exhibits can include newspapers, books, letters, photos, signboards, coins, stamps, costumes, furniture, manufacturing tools, or other equipment, an official with the museum said.
They will be used not only for exhibiting to the public but also for researching the city’s culture and history.
People wishing to contribute items can take them to the office of the museum at No.2 building 193 Hankou Road in Huangpu District or call 63232208 extension 330.
The tariff and other taxes for exhibits contributed by overseas donors will be lifted. The museum will also reward or subsidize donors if they meet its economic criteria.
The museum, which currently has no permanent site, has had to rent halls from other museums for various temporary exhibitions. Part of the museum’s collection can be seen at an exhibition hall in the Oriental Pearl Tower in Pudong’s Lujiazui area, while other exhibits can be seen in various museums across the city. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions at venues such as the Shanghai Library.
