Musical canceled for technical glitch

A TECHNICAL failure led to the cancellation of last night’s musical “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Shanghai Culture Square.

About 2,000 ticket holders have already registered to either for refunds or change the dates of their tickets. The reason for the technical failure was still not clear.

The musical which was scheduled to begin at 7:15pm started late.

The performance was stopped twice in the first scene and eventually called off, netizens said.

A netizen wrote on Weibo that the subtitle screen failed first and then the audio equipment went off.

“It looks like the phantom of the opera is really into some mischief,” joked another netizen.

A ticket holder for tonight’s performance hoped that the glitch would be fixed and the show would be staged.

Late last night, Shanghai Culture Square apologized for the cancellation on its official Weibo account. It also offered a ticket refund/change policy.

Ticket holders of last night’s canceled performance will have to go to the theater at 255 Shaanxi Road S. or to the Hai Shang Culture Center at 1220 Pingxingguan Road for refunds from 9am to 7pm from today to next Monday.

They can get their entire money refunded or get the same-value ticket for another performance. Ticket holders can also call 962388 for more details.

The classic Broadway musical has been running at the Shanghai Culture Square since December 3. Tickets range from 80 yuan (US$13) to 1280 yuan.
